History of Yoga
The history of yoga is a long and complicated one, full of twists and turns. Yoga has its roots in ancient India, and has been practiced in some form or another for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of yoga comes from the Vedas, a collection of sacred texts that date back to around 1500 BCE. The Vedas mention yoga in several places and describe it as a way to join the individual self with the universal self.
Yoga really began to take off in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE, thanks to the efforts of a man named Patanjali. Patanjali codified the practice of yoga into the Yoga Sutras, a text that is still studied by yogis today. Around the same time, another important text, the Bhagavad Gita, was written. The Gita is a part of the Mahabharata, an epic poem that tells the story of a great battle between two branches of a royal family. In the Gita, the god Krishna gives guidance to the warrior Arjuna on the battlefield. Krishna's words are full of wisdom, and they include a section on yoga.
The Gita and the Yoga Sutras remain two of the most important texts in the yoga tradition. In the centuries that followed their creation, many different schools of yoga developed, each with its own unique approach to the practice. Yoga truly began to spread around the world in the 20th century, thanks to the efforts of people like Swami Vivekananda and Paramahansa Yogananda. Today, yoga is practiced by millions of people all over the globe, and its popularity shows no signs of waning.
